Eco-Trust celebrates World Environment Day with the Ministry of the Presidency - hosted by the Department of Environment
July 19, 2019
In memoir of the environment we once knew and preserving the environment that we now have, World Environment Day designated on the 5th June every consecutive year serves as a reminder of where we are now and what must be done for all to live harmoniously with our surroundings. The Ministry of the Presidency Department of Environment has called for the recognition of the importance of Guyana's resources inclusive of its waterways which not only provide a global service as the "lungs of the Earth" (Hon. President David Granger, 2019), helping to purify the air necessary for life but as a source of life and provision. Although the theme is clearly aimed towards combating air pollution, it cannot be stressed enough that water cycling is important in combating this global phenomenon and as a result can be greatly impacted by the proliferation of it.
The well-executed programme followed notable remarks from the Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Public Health - Dr. Shamdeo Persaud; the Director of the Department of Energy - Ms. Ndibi Schwiers and the UN COuntry Team Resident Representative - Ms. Mikiko Tanaka. There were also creative pieces performed by students inclusive of dances, a poem, and a steel band serenade accompanied by a compilation of Mask Challenge clips done by a number of young individuals from various levels of education. A final feature address by the Hon. President David Granger urged the attendees to make every effort to spread the word, appreciate Guyana and what it has to offer whilst making it a better place for not only themselves but others and future generations.
